The Ark is a 501(c)3 non-profit corporation whose board members are scattered across the country. We have people from all walks of life who volunteer and contribute to the running of the shelter both financially and physically. Our contributors are people who love animals, cats in particular, and who believe passionately that caring for and about animals is the right thing to do. Most have cats of their own and want others to share in that joy. They also know what too often happens when no one cares enough to get involved in their care and welfare.
Our founder and primary donor is Susan Marue, who has been working in animal rescue, specifically cats, for over 25 years. Sue does most of the day-to-day work and knows cats better than many veterinarians.
Sue has worked with rescue operations from Portland, Oregon, to various other groups across Northern Arizona, and has collaborated with many veterinarians both in learning medical procedures and consulting on cat behavioral issues.
She has taken care of large cats as well as small, serving a year long internship at a cougar preserve in Oregon, where she interacted daily with 175 lb. cougars overseeing their care and advocating for their welfare. Sue speaks cat as well as any feline, but can’t jump as high as her charges.
“Women and cats will do as they please, and men and dogs should relax and get used to the idea.” - Robert A. Heinlein ♥
